The BMW 330e is the plug-in hybrid version of the 3 Series. It arrived in the UK in 2016 and quickly became a favourite with commuters and company car drivers. It pairs a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery that you charge from the mains.

How the 330e uses its hybrid battery
The 330e can drive on electric power alone for short trips. BMW says that when the high-voltage battery is empty, the car switches to its petrol engine by itself. No two 330e quotes are the same. These are the main factors.
1. Which battery your car has. The later 19.5 kWh pack stores far more energy than the first 7.6 kWh pack. It also sits in a different part of the car, under the rear seats, where the first-generation pack sits under the boot floor.
2. What has actually failed. Not every fault means the whole pack is finished. Sometimes the problem is in one part of the high-voltage system. This is why testing comes first.
3. Whether the BMW warranty still applies. See the next section before you spend anything.

Check your BMW warranty first
BMW UK covers its plug-in hybrids with a three-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty. On top of that, the high-voltage battery is covered for up to six years from first registration or up to 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The battery cover is for failures caused by manufacturing defects.
BMW’s main warranty page lists the mileage limit as 62,000 miles for some battery generations, so check the handbook that came with your car.
What does this mean for you? Count six years from the date your car was first registered. Every first-generation 330e is now past that point.
