A BMW badge tells you less than owners expect. Two cars can both say 330e on the boot and carry completely different high-voltage packs, because BMW changed the battery several times without changing the name. That is the single biggest cause of wrong parts being ordered for these cars.

Notice how many times the same model name appears with different year spans. That is not filing tidiness. Each span is a genuinely different pack.
The i3 ran from 2013 to 2022 with the same body, the same carbon fibre passenger cell and the same floor-mounted pack layout of eight modules with twelve cells each. What changed was the cell.

By the end of the run the pack held nearly double the energy of a launch car while staying exactly the same physical size. Two i3s parked side by side can look identical and need entirely different batteries.
The changeovers also happened partway through calendar years, which is why the year on your V5C is a guide rather than an answer. We match the pack to the individual vehicle.
The 5 Series is the clearest example. The 530e launched with a 9.2 kWh pack, and BMW later raised it to 12.0 kWh in the same body with the same dimensions. The current 530e and 550e, on sale since 2023, use a far larger pack of up to 19.4 kWh usable, charge at up to 7.4 kW, and take just over three hours to fill from a wallbox. BMW quotes electric ranges in the fifties of miles for these cars, against a fraction of that for the earliest plug-ins.
Same three digits on the boot lid. Three different batteries, three different jobs.
What owners notice depends on which kind of BMW they have.

Shared signs across both include high-voltage system warnings on the display, reduced electric assistance under acceleration, and charging behaviour that has changed without any change in how you use the car.
Worth knowing on the i3 in particular: a weak 12 volt battery can produce dramatic drivetrain malfunction warnings that look far more serious than they are. Several i3s arrive here expecting a pack replacement and leave with the 12 volt system sorted instead. We test before we recommend.

BMW upgraded the high-voltage pack several times without renaming the car. The 530e began with a 9.2 kWh battery, moved to 12.0 kWh in the same body, and the version on sale from 2023 uses up to 19.4 kWh usable. The 330e followed a similar pattern across its generations. This is why replacement listings are split by year range, and why the pack has to be matched to the individual vehicle rather than the model name.
The i3 used three different cell capacities over its 2013 to 2022 run in the same physical pack. Launch cars had 60 Ah cells with about 22.6 kWh of gross energy, cars from 2016 stepped up to 94 Ah and 33 kWh, and cars built from late 2018 onwards used 120 Ah cells with 42.2 kWh. The pack itself sits low in the floor and is built from eight modules of twelve cells each, and its outer dimensions never changed.
BMW does not publish a lifespan figure, and no honest answer to this comes as a single number. Plug-in hybrid packs are small and are charged and drained deeply almost every day, which is a harder working life than a self-charging hybrid battery has. Fully electric packs like the i3 are larger and cycle more gently. Age, mileage, climate and charging habits all matter, which is why a health test on your actual car is worth far more than an average.
In the UK you are free to have your car serviced or repaired outside the dealer network, and doing so does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty. That said, a replacement part fitted independently is covered by the supplier’s warranty rather than BMW’s, and terms vary by manufacturer and by the age of the car. If your BMW may still be inside its original battery cover, check with BMW before deciding, and we will happily talk it through with you first.
